It's a little over the top that many of these drugs are not effective at treating erectile dysfunction (ED), according to a new study by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).
The study is the largest in the medical field, as the drug Viagra was shown to work for most men, including about 40 percent of men who took a daily dose of sildenafil (sold as Revatio, or Revifed) and 40 percent of men who took it without any other treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The FDA approved Viagra in 1998, the first of the widely prescribed treatments for ED.
A few years later, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved generic sildenafil (sold as Revatio, sold as Revifed) and tadalafil (Cialis) to treat ED and other conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and impotence. The drug is also used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland is enlarged and the urethra is opened.
Although Viagra and tadalafil are not FDA-approved for ED, there are other FDA-approved treatments for ED and other health problems. These include the medications Levitra (generic for Viagra), Cialis (generic for Staxyn), and Stendra (generic for Avodart).
The study, which was published in theJournal of the American Medical Associationon July 24 in theJournal of Urologyin August, is the latest research in the field of erectile dysfunction treatments.
"We were looking at more than 2 million men who were treated with Viagra (Revatio), and we found that about 40 percent of them had ED in the penis," said Dr. Robert A. Hirsch, a urology professor at UC San Francisco.
"The other 40 percent had ED in the penis and this was due to another side effect of the medication, which is erectile dysfunction," he said.
He said the results are interesting because some of the other treatments for ED have been shown to be effective, such as a pill that can increase blood flow and improve blood flow in men who have erectile dysfunction.
"We know that there's a lot of evidence that there are a number of different types of drugs that have been approved for ED and for other health problems," Hirsch said.
A few other studies have shown similar results for sildenafil and tadalafil.
"The only one of those drugs that is approved for use in the U. that is being approved for the treatment of ED is Viagra," said Dr. Peter Schoenberg, a urology and cardiology professor at UC San Francisco.
"The only other drug that is being approved for the treatment of ED is Cialis, which is currently available as an over-the-counter medication for men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction," he said.
The study was published in thein September.
"The results are interesting because there are a number of different types of drugs that have been approved for the treatment of ED and for other health problems," said Schoenberg, who also works at UC San Francisco.

The study is important because the FDA does not allow for generic sildenafil or tadalafil to be marketed without permission from the manufacturer, according to the study authors. This means that they could not be marketed under any brand name, and so they are not legally allowed to sell sildenafil or tadalafil.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition caused by sexual dysfunction. This means that men have difficulty getting or keeping an erection.
There is no condition that can blame or demand the use of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. However, there are also various factors that can contribute to the condition. A decrease in the amount of blood flow to the penis by this type of enzyme may impair the ability of men to achieve and sustain an erection.
Another contributing factor is the over-the-counter drug products available. People are often advised to consult with a doctor before using any PDE5 inhibitor, so you can assess whether it is right for you. In addition, waiting for medical advice from a doctor is information that may not be available on the product label. This not only depends on your health but also on yourelastic properties and metabolism.
